Given Apple's decision to deprecate OpenGL, as well as Google's more recent decision to require 64-bit versions of all apps submitted to Google Play, I went to have a look at Corona's roadmap, but I learned that the roadmap hasn't been updated for 2019 yet.

Any idea as to when it might be updated?

Iirc, Google require 64 bit for native applications. I don't think Corona apps fall into that category.

Yes, I'm also waiting for Corona's announcement to keep abreast with Apple's decision.

Corona produces native apps. Non-native apps are those that are like HTML based apps.

Our big project right now is re-engineering our Android build process which will include the 64bit support.

That's great and I have no worries about that. But, is there also a chance to have a revised roadmap for 2019?

We are discussing that. We've got quite a bit on our plate with the Android updates, trying to get HTML5 out of beta, working on Linux things (which will probably remain a lower priority), keeping up to date with Apple and Google requirements, keeping plugins up to date, and forward-looking to the new Apple GL requirements etc.

Any plans to do some marketing? I was at Global Game Jam last weekend and not one person I talked to had heard of Corona, from hobbyists to Technical Directors.

Be one of the title sponsors for GGJ and you get the brand in front of 47,000 developers, who are willing to sleep on the floor for a weekend to make games.

@Nick,

Good post, and I've been thinking about this for a while as well.  It is sad and somewhat concerning that Corona has a solid head start on other game engines (especially in the monetization area), but it's never mentioned. I usually do Ludum Dare instead of Global Game Jam, but looking at the GGJ site, there was a list of engines used, and Corona was absent.  Matter of fact, looking at these very forums (and the subreddit), and it's been very quiet lately.

My previous suggestions (when a thread like this pop up)... sponsor a game jam, sponsor MeetUps, attend smaller game and indie devs (East Coast Game Conference is a perfect example).  Godot is having a GodotCon... remember the CoronaCon that never took place?

I've been here since 2012, and I love the product.  (I remember the annual $349 Pro license, and didn't mind it (but $200.00 for Admob, hrmm  ).  I am currently working on converting a game I developed in Unity to Corona (and will write an article on it in the future).  I feel like I am starting to climb my soapbox, so I will end this message here without adding my opinions on a few other items.

Cheers!

Hi Corona Team,

I really would like to hear from you in regards to roadmap of 2019. As Rob mentioned earlier that i do know you have some urgent things to complete in your plate but it is obvious that much of the things that you are dealing with belongs to 2018 roadmap. :(

A friend of mine has attended GGJ, team of his developed a 2D game with Unity. He is also aware of my interest in mobile development. The first thing he asked me why i don't use Unity for development platform and did really know what Corona is.

Above all, he says that, at least 90% of teams were using Unity as if they agreed on using Unity.

Corona is a great platform, easy to use, and definitely needs to heads up to the market and reach much greater audience.

By the way, i really appreciate if you could acknowledge us on roadmap 2019 anytime soon.

Regards,

Seha

I understand a desire to have a formal roadmap, but we may pull something together, but for now, what I provide is the list above.

Any updates on this? Is the Corona Development team still going strong? Or is there a change of priority? Not sure if it is just me, I don't feel any excitement around there anymore.

I am just feeling the same way that, something is getting slower in terms of daily builds, patches, etc. This makes me feel that, something in terms of priority or so is being changed and none of us has no clue in terms of what has been changing lately. The first quarter of 2019 is by gones already and as far as i recall, roadmap 2018 is still open due to several steaks as Rob mentioned earlier. Looking forward to hear from Corona Team.

Regards,

Seha

Yes, I am planning to renew the subscription soon for several plugins (splash screen, admob, etc) so it will be good to know what is the current state of Corona development. The slower delivery of patches and in general announcements in blog or engagement in forum kind implies that the team is shrinking (to cut costs?). I have two new app projects that I am going to start soon and I need some kind of assurance that Corona has plans to be around in the near future. Hope to hear from you guys soon.

I'll chime in here also. I've been using Corona since 2013. 1st class product - truly exceptional.

However.

I am nervous about spending on the monetization plugins as I am not at all confident about the future of Corona. Having said that, developers like me have expressed these concern before and Corona keeps on keeping on.

However.

I don't believe for a minute that Corona is profitable and probably never has been (I hope I am wrong). If I am right, it does not bode well for the future.

Hoping for the best - expecting the worst. :-(

Good to know I am not alone in feeling that way. I am also a long time user since the days when there is a yearly subscription for the use of the SDK. I await some positive replies (hopefully) from the team.

Hi, I've also been using Corona since 2012 (back to the great Carlos Icaza time :( )
In all this time I've learned and enjoyed the product a lot.
But after the change of the owners (2-3 times) and the disappearance of CoronaWeek, for me it was the start of the end.
Please, don't get me wrong. I'm very very grateful to Corona. I've made a good amount of money (I don't know if it's a lot, but it's was good)
But that's it, I'm done. IMHO I don't see a better future for this tool...for me, at least.

So I'm moving to Unity...

Actually I'm converting my games. I can easily incorporate Admob plugin, for free. And I don't mind about splashscreen.

It's sad, but I believe it's the natural path of the technology.

I hope the best for Corona.

Cheers.

(sorry about my english)

How many Corona apps do you have now and are you planning to migrate all of them to Unity?

Well, the resurgence of this thread has sure brought up a lot of doom and gloom.

While I understand that the engineers are busy working on the changes, I would hope that the current owners of Corona could let us know what their general plans are for Corona, both short and long term. The Corona team does a lot of things right, but communication is really their crux. Without Rob's presence here at the forums, there'd be no signs of life from the Corona team (or its owners).

Hi Falcon777,

I'll try to migrate all of them (3).

I was working in the second part of one of those, so I've decided to give "TILES" a try.

I've started with MTE (Million Tiles Engine) but It was abandoned. Then DUSK appears, so I've migrated the code.

Then DUSK was abandoned. So I've try with Ponytiled (i think it's pretty stable, but I don't know about the future of it).

In the other hand, I've tried Unity...it was so simple and fast!

Are you using any plugins for the UI portion? My experience with Unity was not that good when I tried it several years ago. Their support for indie is almost non existent and they have plenty of features which I will probably never use yet they are there to complicate the interface. Probably things are much better now.

Yes, I am not even sure who is the current boss now.  I missed the days when the owner of this product will also engage the community.

Ask yourself one question. Do you want to hurt Corona or do you want to help Corona.

If you want to hurt us...

o Keep up the Gloom and Doom talk

o Switch to another engine (or keep talking about it and encouraging others to do so)

If you want to help us...

o Talk about how great/powerful the engine is. Spread the word.

o Get involved with the open source effort.

o Create assets and plugins for the marketplace.

o Buy a support plan. If you can't contribute thru code, financial support is always welcome.

o Keep using Corona.

As far as a Roadmap goes:

  1. Update the Android Build System. Android 9 is a huge huge huge change. This is our current focus

  2. Create a new public release.

  3. Resume development for Nintendo Switch (after we ensure that our core platforms are up to date)

  4. Prepare for a new graphics engine that Apple will support going forward

  5. Prepare for iOS 13.

The rest of our planned engineering efforts is keeping plugins up to date and fixing bugs. We will look to add other features as we can.

Hi Rob,

You could save us all (including you i guess) a lot of time by posting such info on the blog from time to time. Then there would also not be a need for such gloomy threads on the forums.

I want to help corona but i also need to know it is alive and kicking, and not on a life support machine.

The questions asked here are legit and when replies, if any, are at a bare minimum, a lot goes into guesswork, which seldom is in coronas favour.

Perhaps it would be possible to log a little of your work, progress and intentions on the blog more often?
